The Self & Oblivion
When Swedish progressive metal band VEMOD began work on The Self & Oblivion, they wanted more than an album cover. They wanted a cohesive visual identity that could carry the entire album cycle. Together, we developed a creative direction that extended across album artwork, single covers, merchandise, photography, and brand guidelines, creating a unified visual world that reflected the themes and atmosphere of the music.
Artwork
The album artwork became the foundation for the entire visual identity. Rather than designing a single image in isolation, I developed a concept that could expand across every release. Each single cover was built around the lyrics and emotional tone of its song while remaining visually connected to the album. The result was a cohesive system that gave every release its own identity without losing sight of the larger story.
Merchandise
The merchandise carried the album's visual language beyond the music itself. Some designs were direct adaptations of the artwork, while others explored new concepts inspired by ideas developed throughout the project. This approach created a collection that felt connected while offering fans multiple ways to engage with the album's identity.
Photoshoot
The final artwork relied on custom photography, so producing the right image became just as important as designing the artwork itself. Rather than relying on stock assets or existing photography, I planned and directed a dedicated photoshoot to capture exactly what the project needed. Every aspect of the shoot, from the composition and lighting to the hand positioning and props, was carefully considered to ensure the photographs matched the vision we had established. By creating the imagery specifically for this project, the final artwork felt authentic to the album and provided original assets that could be used across the wider campaign.
Art Direction Book
To help VEMOD maintain a consistent identity throughout the album campaign, I created a comprehensive art direction document. It established guidelines for typography, color, lighting, framing, photography, and video, giving the band a practical framework for producing future content that stayed true to the visual identity we had built together.
